Wellsville: Basketball for the homeless

Headed for the Lady Lions vs Olean basketball game Thursday night? Instead of shelling out a dollar to get in, hand over a personal care item such as a new, pair of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste or even a container of deodorant to be admitted.
Wellsville Middle School Teacher Lois Miller, who for the past six years has organized the Have A Heart for the Homeless campaign, has teamed up with the Lady Lions to raise awareness of the county’s homeless and to boost donations. She will also be sitting in a box this Friday (Valentine’s Day) in the parking lot of First Citizens Bank, giving passersby a glimpse into what it looks like to be homeless during one of the coldest nights of the year, so far.
She will also be taking in donations of personal care items for the homeless during the sit-in. She invites others to join her around the bon fire. The sit-in starts at 5 p.m. Bring your own chair or box AND contribution. All the items collected will be given to ACCORD to distribute to the homeless.
According to ACCORD, which collects statistics concerning homelessness in the county, numbers of homeless individuals and families were up in 2019 when they found 49 people without permanent homes. The 2020 statistics taken on Jan. 29th, have not yet been completed. It promises to be a good game. Forward, Senior Milla Litzburg says the team is ready to beat Olean. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Wellsville.
