Bring back shame

The inspector general's report came out and showed the FBI lied repeatedly to get permission to spy on Donald John Trump's campaign.

Instead of remorse, the fellow who headed the FBI at the time celebrated.

He tweeted, "So it was all lies. No treason. No spying on the campaign. No tapping Trumps wires. It was just good people trying to protect America."

Another lie. Jimmy the Weasel Comey has no shame. His successor also has no shame. The good news is President Trump likely will cashier the man.
The report said, "We also found basic, fundamental and serious errors during the completion of the FBI’s factual accuracy reviews … which are designed to ensure that FISA applications contain a full and accurate presentation of the facts."

The report also said, "We are deeply concerned that so many basic and fundamental errors were made by three separate, hand-picked investigative teams; on one of the most sensitive FBI investigations after the matter had been briefed to the highest level within the FBI."

The highest level within the FBI was Comey.

The Comey-led FBI crossed the line in spying on the political opposition. Instead of doing due diligence, they were careless and sloppy because they knew they could get a FISA warrant for the asking. Rare is the FISA application turned down.

Oops, a FISA judge turned them down in June 2016 when they asked to spy on Donald Trump. How lame must you be to whiff a FISA application? It is like striking out in T-ball.

But they were able to piece together enough lies to get one later. We live in a Do Over World of Participation Trophies.

This was how incompetent they are. Our republic was saved not by the institutions we erected or the checks and balances of the Constitution, but by the inability of the Civil Service-protected lifers to carry out a simple coup d'etat.

There is a part of me that is shamed knowing tinhorns in Latin America and Africa can overthrow their governments at will but our guys in the best-financed government in the world cannot pull it off.

This is America, darn it. We are supposed to be No. 1 in everything all the time.

The other big news is Clint Eastwood debuting his film on how that same FBI tried to railroad Richard Jewell, the hero who discovered the bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and saved many lives. The media did the FBI's bidding in trying to frame him.

Instead of being apologetic and showing remorse for its role 23 years ago, the publishers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are demanding a disclaimer in the movie. They argue that their reporter did a great job and did not sleep with an FBI agent to get her story, as the movie may imply.

Indeed, a media battered by backlash from its Fake News rallies behind the Atlanta paper.

Kelly McBride, a pointy head at the Poynter Institute, tweeted, "Feeling quite queasy Richard Jewell movie. It’s true that journalists made mistakes. But the work of the the AJC’s Kathy Scruggs held up. And she did not sleep with her FBI source as the movie indicates."

Her work fell apart.

He was an innocent man ruined by his hometown newspaper.

We are a society that has no shame. Suddenly, slut shaming is a bad thing, but being a slut is not. Fat-shaming is a bad thing, but being fat is not. Reinforcing bad behavior is toxic.

4 years ago, Psychology Today gave "11 Reasons Never to Shame Anyone."

I can give you one big reason why people should be ashamed: so they stop doing things that harm themselves or others.

That outweighs hurt feelings.

AJC needs to do some introspection. Comey as well.
